What “Fast” Means Before Anyone Quotes a Number

What should the word fast mean in a trading system before anyone is allowed to attach a number to it? This note answers with a list of prior questions, using a marketable order in a liquid future as the public example, and refuses to treat a bare figure as a definition.

A number without a path is a slogan

Speed words are easy to print and hard to interpret. A figure can describe a laboratory loop, a percentile over a quiet hour, a best case, or a wish. Until the path is named, the figure has no subject. The honest order of explanation is the path first and the measurement never, unless the path, the clock, the percentile, and the day are all in the same sentence. This note stops before the measurement. It says what would have to be true before a measurement would even be meaningful.

The questions are about identity. Which message starts the interval, and which event ends it? Whose clock measures the interval? Does the interval include a queue, a decode, a risk check, a gateway, and a network, or only one of those? Is the subject a research replay or a live session? A word like fast that skips those questions is not a description of a system. It is a request that the listener stop asking.

Fast is not a number. It is a claim that is meaningless until the start event, the end event, the clock, and the path, data or order, have been named.

Follow one order far enough to see the pieces

Take a marketable order in a liquid future, such as the E-mini S&P 500, as a public shape rather than as a claim about any desk. A person can point at several different intervals and call each of them the speed. One interval starts when an exchange message is received and ends when an internal record is published. Another starts when a strategy emits a decision and ends when an order message is handed to a gateway. Another ends only when an acknowledgment returns. These are different facts. Quoting one of them under a shared label invites a comparison the facts do not support.

Even a single interval is not one experience. A quiet moment and a moment when every consumer is busy are different operating points. A median and a bad tail answer different operational questions. A test that warms every cache and then records a loop has measured the loop. It has not measured a Monday. The future in the example is useful because the public conversation about futures often collapses all of these intervals into one boast. The collapse is the error this note is about. No figure is offered in its place, because a figure would restart the collapse.

There is also a category mistake between a market-data path and an order path. Making the book available to a strategy is not the same task as submitting an order, and neither task is the same as a risk check that is supposed to be able to stop the order. A system can be careful about one and sloppy about another. Calling the whole arrangement fast decides the question in the adjective. The arrangement should be discussed as a list of boundaries. Hardware, bypass techniques, and colocated machines may appear in that list. They still do not become a number by being named.

What may be said instead

Before a number, the permitted sentence is a sentence about structure. Name the start event, the end event, the clock, and whether a risk check sits outside the model and can say no. Say whether the statement is about a replay or a live path. Say whether the statement is about decoding a book or about sending an order. If the sentence cannot hold those clauses, it is not ready for a quantity, and the quantity would not rescue it.

The liquid future is only a familiar object so the intervals have something to attach to. This note does not describe how quickly any order travels, and it does not invite the reader to fill in a favorite figure. Fast, if the word is kept at all, means that the path under discussion has been specified. It does not mean that a number has been found which ends the discussion.

This piece does not state a speed, a percentile, or a comparison with anyone else. It says which questions have to be answered before a number would mean anything, and it stops before the number on purpose.
