Peer Review, Written Down

What does peer review require when it is written down instead of remembered as a meeting? This note describes that record, using a study of the basis between the E-mini and the cash index as the public example.

A review is a document

Peer review is the act of a second person checking a claim against its own stated tests and leaving a record of what was checked. A conversation can be part of the act. The conversation is not the record. Without the record, the firm has a social memory of agreement, and social memory is how failed work survives. The written review names the object, the tests, the objections, and the decision, including a decision to stop. Stopping is a successful review when the tests say stop.

The reviewer is not a higher title. The point of writing the review down is that the objection has to stand without the objector’s seniority and the answer has to stand without the author’s. A review that only praises has not been written yet. It has been signed. Signatures are cheap. Objections that name a missing clock, a mixed auction and continuous print, or a search that was not disclosed are the substance.

Written peer review is a record of what was checked, what was objected to, and what was decided, including a decision to stop. A meeting without that record is not review.

Reviewing a basis study

Imagine an internal note that studies the basis between the E-mini S&P 500 and the cash S&P 500. A written review asks whether the two clocks are named, whether a stale cash level is being called a live one, and whether the note has slid from definition into a claim that the gap is an opportunity. Those questions can be answered from the text. A reviewer who instead writes that the idea feels promising has reviewed a mood. The basis example is public, so the standard does not depend on a secret dataset. The same questions apply to a duller file.

The record should be short enough to be reread when the study is revived six months later. It should say what would change the decision. If new data arrived with a corrected index level, does the review still hold? If the author tries a second definition of the cash side after seeing the first result, the review should already have forbidden that sequence or should be reopened. Reopening is not a courtesy. It is the review staying attached to the study as the study changes.

Written review also limits who may describe the work later. A study that was declined cannot be described in public as a capability. A study that was accepted for further research cannot be described as a live process. The basis note, even if accepted as a piece of education, is still not an order. The reviewer’s sentence is what keeps those promotions from happening in a hallway. Hallways are where unwritten review goes to become folklore.

What the author owes the reviewer

The author owes a text that can be wrong in a visible way. Plots without the rule, results without the search, and data without the version force the reviewer to guess, and a reviewer who guesses is no longer reviewing. The author’s pride is not an input. A review that cannot be completed because the text is incomplete should say that, and the study should not proceed on charm.

Peer review, written down, is how a second person can disagree in a form the firm can reuse. The futures basis is only the example of an object specific enough to review. The standard is the record, not the meeting that preceded it.

This piece does not claim that review makes a study correct, that a basis trade is being reviewed, or that titles yield to a process only in slogan form. It describes the record a review has to leave, using a public futures basis as the object under review. If the record cannot be reread without the people who sat in the room, the review did not happen. Praise without an objection is not a shorter form of the same record, and it does not become one later.
