How the Firm Describes Its Own Work

How should the firm describe its own work without turning a method into a promise? This note states that descriptive standard, using the public explanation of a closing auction as the kind of sentence that belongs on the site.

Describe the method, not a destiny

The firm can say that it writes hypotheses before tests, that peers review the writing, that models face a set of tests most of them fail, and that a failing model is removed. Those are descriptions of a method. They can be checked against the firm’s behavior by the people inside it, and they can be understood by a reader outside it. They become illegitimate descriptions when a result, a ranking against other firms, or a hint of a legal status is attached. The attachment is the moment a method page becomes an advertisement. Advertisements are not the genre of these notes.

The same standard binds recruiting, campus hours, and research pages. A description that is too modest for a recruiting slide and too plain for a research page is probably in the right register. If a sentence only works in one of those rooms, it is a sentence the other room should not inherit. The public site is the strictest room, because it has the least context and the longest life. A sentence that cannot sit there should not be said in a room where it will be quoted as if it had sat there.

A legitimate public description of the work states a method or a public mechanism a skeptical reader can check. It does not attach a result, a rank, or a status to that statement.

An auction sentence that stays clean

The firm can explain the New York closing auction: a batch, an official price, a mechanism different from the continuous book. That sentence describes a market. It does not describe the firm’s skill. Adding the firm’s name to the sentence does not make the auction a capability. The clean description is one a competitor could publish without changing a fact. If the sentence becomes false when the brand is removed, it was not a description of work. It was a claim of identity. Identity claims of that kind do not belong in the educational series.

Internal work can be described at the level of class. The firm uses records with clocks, accepts features explicitly, and keeps research notebooks away from order paths. Those clauses are about control, not about achievement. They do not say the controls have never failed. A mature description would rather say how a failure is recorded than imply that failure is absent. The auction example remains the public half of the page. The control clauses are the self-description. Mixing them so that the auction seems to demonstrate the controls is the slide to avoid.

Readers who want terms rather than description have a different page. The method notes are not the terms, and they should say so rather than impersonate them. Personal information is not a research anecdote. None of this requires a story about a named colleague. The work can be described without a protagonist. A protagonist is how a method becomes a profile, and a profile is a different genre with different temptations.

Prefer the sentence that can be audited

When two descriptions are available, prefer the one a skeptical colleague can audit. Auditable does not mean flattering. “We remove models that fail stated tests” can be audited by looking for the removals. “We are rigorous” cannot be audited at all. The closing auction can be audited against the exchange’s own description. That is why it is a good public sentence. It does not need the firm in order to be true.

How the firm describes its own work is a choice to stay with methods, limits, and public mechanisms. The auction is the example of the third. The choice is the culture. A more exciting description is usually a worse one.

This piece does not offer a slogan to replace the method, a status, or a result. It says the firm’s public sentences should stay as checkable as an explanation of the New York closing auction. A sentence that only works when the brand is left on it has failed that test.
