Why is disagreement treated as part of the method rather than as a social problem to be smoothed? This note describes a useful disagreement, using two readings of one Microsoft tape as the public example.
A room can agree because the question was vague, because a senior person spoke first, or because disagreement feels like delay. None of those agreements is evidence. A method that wants evidence has to make disagreement easy to record and hard to personalize. The disagreement should name a fact that would settle it, a test both sides accept, and a date when the test will have been run. If no fact would settle it, the argument is not yet about the work. It is about taste, and taste does not get to wear the costume of research.
The cultural rule is that the objection is written beside the claim, not filtered through whether the objector was pleasant. A pleasant false consensus is a failure. A sharp, specific split that produces a better test is the method working. People are still expected to be exact rather than cruel. Exactness is the respect. Softening a real objection until it disappears is not kindness. It is how the method loses its memory.
A useful disagreement names a claim, an objection, and a fact that would settle the difference. A disagreement about status is not part of the method.
Microsoft shares can be seen on more than one public record. Suppose one reader treats a consolidated last price as the day, and another insists that an auction print be labeled separately from the continuous session. They disagree. The useful form of the disagreement is a pair of sentences about the file: which condition codes are in the series, and what question each series can answer. The useless form is a pair of sentences about who understands markets. The tape can settle the factual part. It cannot settle the status contest, so the status contest is out of bounds.
Once the disagreement is specific, the test is ordinary. Rebuild the series both ways for a named week and see which downstream statement still stands. Maybe a feature was using the auction as if it were continuous trading, and the feature changes when the label is fixed. That result is a gift from the disagreement. A culture that had smoothed the objection in the meeting would have shipped the unlabeled series. The Microsoft example is public so anyone can see that the split is about a record, not about a personality.
Disagreement also has a stop. After the test, the written review says what was decided. Continuing the argument without new facts is not more method. It is the social problem the method was designed not to feed. The person who lost the point on the auction label is not owed a consolation prize in the next meeting, and the person who won is not owed a blank check. The next claim starts again, with room for a new objection. The method is the repetition of that pattern, not a permanent faction.
A future reader should find the disagreement without reconstructing the mood of the room. The note can be short. Claim, objection, test, decision. If the decision was to keep both series because they answer different questions, say that. If the decision was that one series was a mistake, say that too. Buried splits return as repeated work.
Disagreement is part of the method when it is specific enough to test. Two readings of a Microsoft tape are enough of an example. A culture that cannot hold that small split will not handle a larger one. It will call the larger one a people issue and move on, which is the failure mode.
This piece does not claim that conflict is a good in itself, that one reading of the Microsoft tape is the firm’s view, or that decisions are made by whoever argues longest. It describes the kind of disagreement that produces a test. An objection that names no fact is not that kind, and it does not get extra time because it was forceful.
